“In college, administrators are more likely to favor the students with independent traits who are at school to enhance their personal skills and improve their knowledge base. Oftentimes, their family members preceded them as college graduates. But first-generation college students from low-income families are more interdependent. They likely attend college not only for themselves but for their families and communities.
Here’s where things get awkward. College administrators are more likely to favor the students with upper-middle-class behaviors because they too are upper-middle class. These upper-middle-class systems of privilege are how you kick the creativity ball away from some of the brightest minds America will never know.
In this context, America doesn’t have a creativity crisis. America has a widespread resistance to addressing classism in classrooms and recognizing creativity in all its forms.”
